A group of nine students competed in last week's Wisconsin Academic Decathlon in Madison and took home trophies and a first place finish in their division.

Marathon City had the highest team score in the speech category, beating out even Division 1 and 2 teams.

The Decathlon requires teams to be a mix of A, B and C students. Since August, the group had been studying a range of extra material from arts and literature to economics and math.

Coaches say it really helps prepare the students for college level course work.

United States Academic Decathlon

  • Dr. Robert Peterson, former Superintendent of Schools in Orange County, California, first created the Academic Decathlon.

  • The United States Academic Decathlon (USAD) was founded in 1981.

  • The Academic Decathlon is a 10-event scholastic competition for teams of high school students.

  • Students are tested in 10 categories:
    • Art
    • Economics
    • Essay
    • Interview
    • Language and Literature
    • Mathematics
    • Music
    • Science
    • Social Science
    • Speech.

  • Each high school enters a team of nine students: 3 "A" or Honor students, 3 "B" or Scholastic students, and 3 "C" or Varsity students.

  • Gold, Silver and Bronze medals are awarded for individual events and total scores.

  • Winning teams advance through the local, regional, and state levels of competition. The state champions compete at the national finals.

  • Based on the model of the athletic decathlon, the Academic Decathlon requires participants to prepare for 10 academic events.

  • Like the athletic contest, the Academic Decathlon does not permit participants to specialize but rather the Academic Decathlon encourages academic versatility by requiring students to prepare for all 10 events.
