When times are tough, libraries offer a unique escape from the outside world....for free.
As the state of the economy decreases, library traffic at Wausau's Marathon County Public Library increases.
The library is a whirlwind of information and convenience, and in the past year traffic has grown 3.5 percent.
"It's very convenient. It's almost got everything you need," said Jon Sheppard, a library regular.
The library has a lot going on.
Sure they have books, but according to director Phyllis Christensen, more and more people are coming in for DVDs, CDs, books on tape and free internet access.
"We have a lot of peole coming just to use the internet for their personal use. Maybe to do research, maybe to do email, play games," said Christensen.
And as the cost of energy skyrockets, she says some people are staying close to home this summer.
The library also offers free wireless internet, which appeals to Wausau resident Gregory Gile.
"It's provided by the library. It's no charge for anybody that has a lap top and it's seamless."
Christensen hopes electronic catalogs, databases and self-checkouts will appeal to many.
Weekly library goer Melita Boerschinger likes the simplicity.
"It's kinda convenient. I just got used to it when they were busy one day."
The library director says the brand new drive-thru window has been a big hit. It's open Monday through Friday.
And next week they'll install a stairway to connect the two surrounding parking lots.
