America's Fight Against Terrorism

There are now more than 2,000 Wisconsin Air and Army National Guard members on active duty in the fight against terrorism and the build-up toward war in Iraq.

That's according to Guard spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Tom Donovan.

But he says so far only 105 troops of the 2,240 that have been called up are serving overseas.

Donovan says many of the Wisconsin units are listed for overseas deployment but they haven't got that far yet. None are combat units.

During the peak of the Gulf War in 1991, Wisconsin had some 1,400 Guard members on active duty.

Donovan says there's more now because President Bush is asking the Guard to help support three assignments -- homeland defense and security, the war on terrorism and the build-up of forces for possible war with Iraq.
