Anyone between the ages of 12 and 16 must be certified to ride an ATV in Wisconsin.

You can get certified through safety courses where instructors trained by the Department of Natural Resources teach you how important it is to where the right kind of helmet, how to handle the vehicle in all conditions and survival if your vehicle leaves you stranded.

The Trail Supervisor with Marathon County says there are about 12 to 15 fatal ATV accidents every year in our state, but he hopes to reduce that number by teaching people how the properly use the vehicles.

If you're caught riding an ATV without the proper certification, fines start at $125.
