As President Bush makes his case that the United States is running out of time before critical decisions have to be made regarding Iraq, a local historian who lived in the Middle East tells Newschannel 7 he thinks that may not necessarily be true.

Professor Neil Lewis has lived in Turkey and other parts of the Middle East. He says in his experience, Muslims are not a violent people.

"The majority of Muslims throughout the world are peace-loving and not at all problematic," Lewis said.

Just as people in U.S. vary in how they interpret and practice their faiths, said Lewis, Muslims do too. And to deter violence, it's necessary for peaceful Muslims to denounce extremists who may believe it's all right to hurt innocent people in the name of religion.
