Despite the spectacle fireworks can provide, it's also important to remember they can be dangerous.

Marathon County Sheriff's Lieutenant Dale Wisnewski says 62-year-old Larry Hollatz of Mosinee suffered cuts and burns after a firecracker ignited unexpectedly in his face. Hollatz was taken to a Marshfield hospital on Friday to treat his injuries.

Authorities say despite that unfortunate incident, the rate of firework-related injuries in Marathon County is relatively low this year, and they'd like to keep it that way.

John Krueger, who is a Safety Officer for the Rib Mountain Fire Department says, "If you have ground fireworks that are legal, have your garden hose charged nearby, so that if the sparks fly off the ground and start a fire, or you can just wash down that area to make sure that's cooled down."

Krueger says you should also always keep a bucket of water nearby when using fireworks, and of course keep kids and flammable objects away.
