Supper Club Stories: Sky Club in Plover

After nearly 80 years, three generations, and thousands of Friday night fish fry’s, Sky Club in Plover fits the mold of a true Wisconsin Supper Club. Owners Patrick and Eric Freund credit the restaurant’s continued success to being able to keep the restaurant all in the family.

"A lot of people don't get a chance to work with their family. We all know some days it’s great, some days it’s bad but that’s just work." jokes Co-Owner Eric Freund.

Sky Club dates back to 1934. Its name comes from an airport that used to be located just down the road. Brothers Eric and Patrick have spent their entire lives working at Sky Club, and in an increasingly competitive restaurant scene, Sky Club is able to set themselves apart.

"The chains, they microwave their food as you know. Everybody knows that, we cook things fresh from the grill. We start it raw, cook it fresh, food to order it is what we try to do. Makes everything authentic." Patrick Freund says.

Sky Club is full of firsts. From helping to popularize the Brandy Old-Fashioned Sweet, to something even more well known. Sky Club is said to have created the first salad bar in the entire country back in 1950. It is a historical claim they are proud of.

"Back in the 1960’s, I remember we had a little ice salad bar in the back. You made a salad with whatever was popular back then. People were like, that is pretty cool, and it grew and it grew. " Patrick Freund said.

The Freund Brothers are proud to carry on not only a family tradition, but also a tradition for all of the Badger State.

"Anywhere outside of Wisconsin nobody knows what a supper club is. Were very fortunate to my grandfather, my father, and my uncle for what they started and had built and really excited for my brother and I to build on those trends." says Eric Freund.

Luckily Sky Club plans to carry on those traditions for generations to come.
