Wisconsin State Patrol will be putting the brakes on speeders and drunk drivers this Fourth of July weekend.
Lieutenant Tim Carnahan says this is a popular travel holiday and some officers are even restricted from taking vacation time to help keep you safe this weekend.
The extra patrols start this Thursday and Lieutenant Carnahan says they have zero tolerance policy; if you get pulled over you will get a ticket.
Lieutenant Carnahan says they have seen a slight decrease in speeding in the area in the last few months.
He says the price at the pump may be encouraging drivers to slow down so they can get a few more miles to the gallon.
He also says officers tend to see the number of speeders and impaired drivers increase during holiday weekends. He calls that a dangerous combination.
"Taken singularly, they are they are pretty dangerous, but when you combine the two, that’s when a normal property damage can be a crash with injuries or even a fatal crash," Lieutenant Carnahan said.
Lieutenant Carnahan adds that they don't want to keep people from celebrating this weekend, they just want you to do it responsibly.
Lieutenant Carnahan says a speeding ticket can run you several hundred dollars and if you are caught drinking and driving, you could lose your license for six months on the first offense.
He also encourages other drivers if you see someone that is driving wreck-less or appears impaired, don't hesitate to call 911.
Lieutenant Carnahan says if you are planning to travel this weekend, try to avoid traveling during the most hectic times, which are Thursday night and Sunday afternoon and evening.
