Flames engulfed Wausau Hardwoods in rural Marathon early Wednesday morning, causing extensive damage to the roof and exterior of the saw mill. But thanks to the alertness of the family dog, it wasn't a total loss.
Snickers barked loudly at the sight of the mill on fire. That woke up his owner, Robie Ort, who lives next door to the mill he owns. Ort then called the fire department, which was able to save most of the equipment in the building.
Wausau Hardwoods is one of the largest lumber producers in the Midwest and has about $1 million worth of equipment inside.
While Snickers’ barking saved most of the equipment, the building suffered extensive damage and will have to be rebuilt. The company's 10 employees will have to go on unemployment until the mill is up and running again.
But if it hadn't been for an alert pup, it could've been a lot worse.
