The idea of making restaurants smoke-free in Merrill has some people hot under the collar.

The city is looking at possibly drafting an ordinance that would ban smoking from places that serve food.

One restaurant owner says he thinks the city should just leave things the way they are.

"It gives people a choice," Peter Buntrock, the owner of the Kozy Korner on Merrill's Grand Avenue said. "If you don't want to go to a restaurant where there's smoking, you'd probably go to a restaurant where there's no smoking at all, and for people who want to smoke after a meal, there should be a place for them."

The idea is just in the planning stages right now. The city says it will ask for input from the community before proposing such an ordinance.
