School districts all across Wisconsin are facing declining enrollment, and looking at less state aid because of it.
Much of the problem can be linked to Wisconsin's shrinking birthrate. In Marathon County and Wisconsin the birthrate has decreased in the last decade.
Statewide enrollment has fluctuated up and down in 13-year cycles since the 60's. Currently, we are in about year six of a downturn.
That shows when school districts like Wausau graduate more than 800 seniors but only welcome 500 kindergartners the next fall.
