Fireproof Your Home Before You Take a Vacation

Cleaning out her house with a summer yard sale seems like a good idea for Rothshild resident Lindy Bochanyin, which in the long run could help her house remain fireproof.

"In the last hour or two, things have picked up (at the yard sale)," Bochanyin said.

However, on Tuesday, July 9, someone had to pick up the phone to report a house fire that destroyed a house on the 700 block of Leon Street.

"My heart goes out to those people," Bochanyin said. "You leave home expecting you're going to come back exactly the way you left it, and you come home to find out that everything you own is gone."

The family that lived in the house that was taken by the blaze, which the cause is still unknown, was gone out of town when the fire took their home they say they built together.

Wausau Fire Lieutenant Wally Olson said turning things off is a good start when you leave your house for a long period of time.

"Nothing happens until that one time when everything just goes wrong and something starts on fire," Olson said.

Olson also said something people don't usually think about unplugging is their washer machine. He said it is hazardous to keep it plugged in because the water flows all the time in the tube located in the back of the machine. After a while it may wear down or break. If your washer machine floods, the water could catch a current with something electric and spark a fire.

Another thing he said is to keep your house clean so things don't catch on fire near fire-prone appliances such as toasters or extension cords.

"Keep your house orderly," Olson said. "Don't overuse extension cords. Don't put too many appliances on one small cord. If you know you're going to be gone for a long time, it doesn't hurt to check anything that has a flame."
