Hawaiian quilts symbolize an attachment and love for the islands. Even though Hawaiian quilting isn't nearly as common in Northcentral Wisconsin, it's an art several people in Wausau had a hand in Saturday. The practice has spiritual and meaningful significance for the Hawaiian people, and is a part of their heritage. It dates back to the 1800s.
Although there are several techniques, Hawaiian quilting is traditionally done by hand, and instructors say a good quilt can go for thousands of dollars.
"To look at a genuine hand Hawaiian quilt, that's been appliquéd. A bed quilt will cost $3,000 to $5,000 dollars," said Wiegal.
Wiegal learned the art while she was living in Hawaii. She's been teaching it to others since she moved back Central Wisconsin, about 10 years ago.
She says the key to a quality quilt is the number of stitches per inch. She says 10 to 12 is usually a good number.
