Woman Convicted of Stealing Nearly $30K from Saratoga Mini Mart

A Wisconsin Rapids woman convicted of embezzling money from the Saratoga Mini Mart will spend 10 days in jail and three years on probation. She must also pay restitution.

According to court documents, Sanya Bernal, 34, would ring up customers, put their money in the register and after they left she would pocket the money or use it to by lottery tickets.

The investigation began in January 2013, after the owner and the manager discovered an usual amount of voided transactions.

The manager says the total losses from the alleged scheme totaled $29,971 with $13,177.26 captured on surveillance video.

Bernal was questioned by a deputy from the Wood County Sheriff's Department on April 30. She denied any involvement said she was unsure why there would be so many voided transactions.

The conviction is result of plea deal with prosecutors in which Bernal pleaded guilty.

A Wisconsin Rapids woman is now charged with embezzling money from the place where she worked.

The investigation began in January, after the owner and the manager of Saratoga Mini Mart discovered an usual amount of voided transactions.

According the criminal complaint, the suspect, Sanya Bernal, 34, would ring up customers, put their money in the register and after they left she would pocket the money or use it to by lottery tickets.

The manager says the total losses from the alleged scheme totaled $29,971 with $13,177.26 captured on surveillance video.

Bernal was questioned by a deputy from the Wood County Sheriff's Department on April 30. She denied any involvement said she was unsure why there would be so many voided transactions.

Bernal is charged with theft in a business setting. If convicted, she faces a maximum sentence of six years in prison.
