State Funding to Libraries May be Cut

Learning to live with less is what many organizations in our state are facing right now, including public libraries. It's all part of the state's efforts to slash more than $160-million off the books.

It's a tough story for those who depend on state funding. Without knowing how much they'll get from the state, organizations won't know how much they will have to spend in the end.

"We have something of a plan," said Mary Bethke, the director of the Marathon County public library. "It changes somewhat from month to month, based on what we're hearing, and what services we want to make sure are left in place."

The state is looking at a $3.2 billion shortfall until 2005.
