Thanks to some quick thinking by a seven year old, a duplex on Hamilton Street in Wausau is still standing. The boy took action after spotting a fire on his neighbor's second floor deck.
7-year-old Dylan Carver was outside playing in his yard when he saw flames on his neighbor's deck.
Dylan's mom, Jacinta Carver says, "He just came in and told me what was going on. I grabbed my phone, and ran outside and saw the flames and called 9-1-1."
And Fire Marshal, Ron Omernick says Dylan was not the only one to report the fire. A cook from a restaurant across the street spotted the fire too and ran over to warn the residents.
Omernick says quick thinking is what saved the building. And when asked how he knew what to do, Dylan says, "Well at school, fire fighters came to school."
Fire Marshal, Ron Omernick, says, "The Wausau Fire Department goes into all of the area schools and we teach kids about fire safety. It's one of our goals to have a fire safe neighborhood. The earlier we can get to the children to teach these things the faster they seem to respond when an emergency does occur."
Jacinta says, "I'm just really proud of him. He did a really good job."
Omernick says the fire was most likely started by cigarettes that were not disposed of properly.
