UPDATE: Names Released in Highway 49 Crash

The Marathon County Medical Examiner has released the names two women who died during a traffic crash Wednesday in Marathon County.

Lillian Longtail, 75 and Nichole Merckes, 32, both of Shawano died as result of the crash.

The Marathon County Sheriff's Department is investigating a car versus semi accident Thursday morning in the Town of Elderon.

Around 11:30 a.m., first responders from Wittenberg and Hatley responded to the report of a semi accident involving a car on Highway 49 near Elm Road.

Our reporter at the scene said the semi looks like and grain truck, and had slid off the highway. A passenger car was flipped on its roof.

A Lieutenant with Sheriff's Department says the two people inside the car have died as result of the accident, the semi driver was not seriously hurt.

Traffic is reduced to one lane on Highway 49 as the scene was being cleared.

The crash knocked out power to surrounding homes. A woman who lives in the area tells NewsChannel 7 she was told power would not be restored until 7 p.m.

The victim's names will not be released until their families can be notified.
