NorthCentral Wisconsin has escaped much of the flood damage seen in parts of our state so far, but many people are thinking about protecting themselves from dangerous water levels.

Local dam owners say the Wisconsin River in Northern and Central Wisconsin is above normal for this time of year, but still far away from flood levels. Because flash flooding can happen in an instant, the American Red Cross advises everyone to pay close attention to the wet weather and take all watches and warnings seriously. But before a flood happens... There are a few things you can do to prepare.

Jenny Legaspi, of the American Red Cross in Marathon County says, "If you have renters insurance or home owners insurance you have flood coverage. And if that's something you don't have it's defiantly something you might want to consider."

The American Red Cross says if you may be at risk for flooding have a portable disaster kit that contains food, water, a battery operated radio, and a flash light. Also make sure you have extra supplies of medication and put important documents in water-proof containers.
