Don Hewitt Retires

The creator of "60 Minutes" is stepping down.

Don Hewitt has been executive producer of the CBS show since it premiered in 1968.

Hewitt is 80 years old. He'll be succeeded by Jeff Fager, the executive producer of "60 Minutes Two." Fager is 32 years younger than Hewitt.

"60 Minutes" is the longest-running prime-time show on the air and still the most popular newsmagazine. Hewitt is credited with inventing the modern-day format of the TV newsmagazine.

Once he leaves "60 Minutes," Hewitt will become executive producer at CBS News. He'll be in charge of developing new projects and offering advice to his successor.
