Marshfield DoorSystems is capitalizing on one of Wisconsin's most abundant resources and is doing it in an environmentally friendly way.
In recent weeks Marshfield DoorSystems has produced as many as 18,000 to 19,000 doors a week.
Don Bergman, CEO of Marshfield DoorSystems, says, "To keep that in perspective this is not the typical door that's on my bedroom. These are big heavy commercial doors and last year we shipped more than 700,000 doors."
The manufacturer says they ship doors all over the country and even overseas - Including the Middle and Far East.
Steve Farley, Director of Environmental Sustainability, "It's a challenge... There's no doubt about that but its a challenge we've decided to take on."
Marshfield DoorSystems is the first in the nation to add an Environmental Sustainability Department - one that ensures they can produce a high quality product that meets all national codes for "green buildings."
It hasn't been a cheap transition. The company spent millions of dollars to improve efficiency of their Particle Board Mill and to install new equipment throughout the factory.
They're using pre-consumer recycled content, meaning every door is made of 42% recyclable material.
Farley says, "That is material that we obtain through factories. Basically the waste stream of other factories. Example a lumber mill will have a lot of sawdust - that sawdust is something we can use to make the particle board that we use to make the doors."
Everything from the wood to glues and varnishes, the company is making sure these products are safe for the environment, and up to the standards their customers - all around the world - have come to expect.
Marshfield DoorSystems says in addition to being a green business, they get all of their wood from local growers within a 100 mile radius of the city. They say it helps stimulate the local economy and saves on shipping and gas costs.
