Budget Cuts to Hit UW-System

UW-System schools are about to see a five percent cut in their spending budget.

Gov. Jim Doyle is calling for the legislature to approve $161.5 million in emergency spending cuts by June 30, which includes a five percent cut to the UW-System. This is an effort to help reduce what is set to be a $3.2 billion budget deficit over the next two years.

UW-Marathon County Dean Jim Veninga is worried about the effects a five percent cut may have. He says they are already operating at reduced costs and any cuts could have severe consequences. He estimates that a cut would probably result in a loss of 8,000 students and maybe 1,000 faculty positions across the UW-system, so every campus would fee the effects.

He says one more bi-product of the budget cut will be even higher tuition costs.
