Recently the weather has been dangerously cold for people in Northcentral Wisconsin, and it can be harmful to pets too.

Workers at the Lincoln County Humane Society say the best thing to do in cold weather is to bring pets inside. If people absolutely have to let a dog outside to do its business, however, there are some precautions owners can take.

"Take them out on a leash," Carol Hein, of the Lincoln County Humane Society advises. "Let them go to the bathroom, keep the time limited. Make it a shorter time."

Hein also warned to keep the pets dry.

"Dry their pads off if they are wet, especially if there's salt, if you have salted sidewalks or something," said Hein.

Hein says a good rule of thumb is to think of your pets like you would children, planning ahead to make good decisions for them, because they can't do it for themselves.
