MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Officials have come up with a unique way to combat panhandling and alcoholism in downtown Madison: ban the sale of cheap liquor in that area.

The idea came up for discussion Wednesday night among downtown liquor store operators and the city's Alcohol License Review Committee.

Officials propose prohibiting the sale of cheap booze, such as 24-ounce cans of beer and four-packs of malt liquor.

But business owners say the ban won't stop problem drinkers. They contend beggars will just look else wear or beg longer to get more expensive liquor.

Alderman Mike Verveer says he's certain the ban will happen.

The details are to be worked out by the end of June when Madison liquor licenses must be renewed.
