EAGLER RIVER, Wis. (AP) -- The Vilas County Sheriff's Department says a man died during the Journey's Marathon over the weekend.

The department says it received a report of a man collapsing during the race on Saturday. Authorities took 68-year-old Robert Zapranoff of Mercer to Eagle River Memorial Hospital. That's where the county coroner pronounced him dead.

The marathon from Boulder Junction to Eagle River is in its 12th year. The Eagle River Chamber of Commerce's Connie Heeg says this is the event's first fatality.

Online records kept by the marathon say Zapranoff completed the race last year.
