An Arizona-based developer is hoping to build an eight story housing complex on the corner of Clark and Water streets in downtown Stevens Point, the same corner where the Rivermen mural is currently located.

The Rivermen mural was created just last summer on the side of the van's floor covering building.

Howard Van Asten has been in the same location for thirty-seven years, but will be selling his building this October if the project goes through.

Van Asten, or Van as he is known, hopes to see the mural incorporated in the new building in some way.

"I can see ways that it can be incorporated into the building, from the street there could be a walk-way just like there is on Main Street. To the mall, says Van Asten."

Some residents put hours of time and thousands of dollars into constructing the mural, and they hope the mural will be around after new construction comes in. But some say they're skeptical that will be the case.

"I think most of us hoped it would be a landmark that would be here for many years and I think we all enjoy coming over the Clark Street Bridge and seeing the beautiful job they did on this mural," says Stevens Point resident Larry Davis.

Mayor Gary Wescott told the Stevens Point Journal Friday the mural will stay in the downtown area even if the building is removed.

Even with the mayor’s assurance, residents continue to voice their concerns over the future of the mural.

"We're certainly not against urban development or progress, I want to see it, but lets do it right."

The plans for this project, which has been titled the View Point Executive Center, go before the City Plan Commission at 4 p.m. on Monday.

Until then, the future of the Rivermen remains a mystery.
