A local Girl Scout Troop is teaming up with the Marathon County Humane Society to host an open house at the shelter this weekend.

The scouts made animal blankets and treats, and people can check out the newest pets up for adoption.

Shelter manager Judy Lombard says the Humane Society is very active in the community, offering education programs, lost and found services, and pet owner counseling in addition to adoption and stray pet services.

"There's a whole lot of things we do that are under the surface, and aren't really apparent and we're hoping people will come in and learn about those," says Lombard.

The Humane Society is also hoping to raise about a million more dollars for a new animal shelter on Wausau's west side.

The open house runs from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
