U.W. Stevens Point officials say students are already commenting on the benefits of a green roof recently installed.
A Chicago-based company has installed nearly $100,000 worth of sedum on the roof of the Albertson Learning Resources Center. The plants will soak in the first inch of rainfall.
This will help prevent pollution from flowing through the sewers and into the Wisconsin River, but they also serve as an insulator to keep the building cool.
Larry Beck, the Director of Facilities Services, says, "The occupants inside have already noticed; the reflection in the morning of the sun off the old stone roof was quite noticeable, and they could tell a difference in temperature."
He says the project has been in the works for the past two years and that it's all funded by private donations.
