GERMANTOWN, Wis. (AP) -- A junior at Germantown High School has been confirmed to have bacterial meningitis.
The Washington County Health Department says anyone who has come in contact with the student should get antibiotics as a precaution.
Bacterial meningitis can be spread through close personal contact as in kissing or sharing food or drink.
It is a potentially fatal infection of spinal-cord fluid or the fluid surrounding the brain. Early symptoms may include the sudden onset of high fever, headache, vomiting, stiff neck and a rash.
The Germantown student, hospitalized Saturday, has called friends from the hospital to tell them of her illness and the need to get tested for it.
