A deer shot in Marathon County is being retested for Chronic Wasting Disease after the first test came up 'suspicious.'
The Wisconsin Viral Research Group in Wauwatosa says the doe did not test positive, but it was not a negative result either. The deer will be retested.
The director of the lab says he thinks the deer may have been recently infected with the disease, but the prions that cause CWD were not developed enough for the test to come up positive.
The DNR says the lab is not certified by the USDA, so the results cannot be guaranteed.
The state is testing for CWD on its own, and hunters should wait for those results in mid winter before they make any decisions on the safety of their meat.
