State Patrol Asking Travelers to Buckle Up

On your way to grandmother's house for Christmas, the State Patrol would like you to wear your seat belt.

Nearly 800 people have died in crashes on Wisconsin roads this year, and many of the victims were not wearing seatbelts.

The Department of Transportation is asking Governor-Elect Jim Doyle to toughen the state's seatbelt laws.

Currently, police can't ticket someone for not wearing their seatbelt unless they pull them over for something else. But the State Patrol would like to make not wearing a seatbelt a primary violation with a $25 fine.

The State Patrol says the extra fine might be enough to convince more people to buckle up.
