A Federal Government contract that provided hundreds of jobs to WPS Health Insurance in Wausau has been lost, leaving the future of the branch in question.

The WPS Insurance office in Wausau serviced a contract held by TriWest Healthcare Alliance. They provided insurance to military families in the west region of the country, handling more than a million claims each month. This contract was the reason WPS Health Insurance expanded into Wausau. It initially brought more than 500 jobs to the area in 2003 and 2004, now the future of those jobs is a complete unknown.

TriWest spokesman Scott Celley says, 'The team at WPS has done a fantastic job, does a fantastic job handling claims for the care delivered to nearly three-million military family members in the western US. They do nearly a million claims a month."

WPS, who is headquartered in Madison, refused to comment on the development.

The company employees more than 4,000 people in the state, according to their website.
