Some area fire fighters are more prepared to enter a burning building after the training they received this morning.
The Mid-State Technical College and the Stockton Fire Department hosted a controlled burn earlier today to give firefighters the full effect of how dangerous the flames can be.
Imagine being in a burning house, with smoke so thick you could not see your hand in front of your face.
Well fire fighters in Stockton didn’t have to imagine because they experienced the heat at a live fire demonstration as part of a training exercise.
They had the chance to learn safety techniques, understand proper procedures, and familiarize themselves with being comfortable in their gear.
The average fire fighter’s gear can weigh anywhere from 40 to 65 pounds so events like the burn test can really teach them how to handle this heated situation.
Especially fire fighter Kelly Pilsner, who got the chance to enter the house for the first time, she says, "This is a great chance to learn to be able to practice, you can learn the right routines and how to do and help save some one else”.
Fire fighters also got the chance to see new equipment in the fire fighting industry, like Fire-Interruption-Technology or FIT for short.
The device is designed to make it easier for first responders to safely enter a building, protect property, and help the environment.
That FIT tool fire fighters used in the training session helped reduce the fire's temperature, allowing them to put out the flames in under a minute.
