The Department of Natural Resources says deer license sales are down 16 percent, but business has really picked up the day before gun-deer season opens.

For the first time, many registration sites in Northcentral Wisconsin are doubling as collection sites. DNR officials say the steady stream of people buying licenses is a good sign they will get a good sample of the deer population to test for Chronic Wasting Disease.

"I think a lot of people held off with CWD on their minds and now have educated themselves on the risk," says DNR wildlife biologist Rich Wissink. "Whether or not that risk is significant to them and they're families."

DNR biologists say, they hope to collect 550 deer heads from each county to test for CWD.
