Stopping CWD

It was the expert opinion on Monday that the state's doing the right thing to stop Chronic Wasting Disease.

A panel of seven UW Madison professors in the animal health and related fields say the best way to combat the deadly brain disease is to quickly eliminate it while it's confined to a small area.

The state Department of Natural Resources wants to kill all the deer in a 389-square-mile area around Mount Horeb. That's where three deer infected were found this past February.

The professors also recommended limiting the transfer of deer between game farms, at least until a reliable live test to detect the disease is developed. The professors say humans transporting deer can spread the disease farther and faster than deer moving on their own.

The panel also says the state should create a Chronic Wasting Disease advisory council.
