Deer Crossing

Wisconsin motorists are being urged to keep an eye out for deer.

The state Department of Transportation says that crashes between deer and cars caused nine deaths and more than 800 injuries last year. The agency says about 41 percent of those accidents happened in October and November.

William Cameron of rural Waupaca died Friday after his motorcycle collided with a deer in the Waupaca County town of St. Lawrence.

More than half of all reported accidents in Green Lake and Marquette counties last year involved deer.

Authorities say that people often lose control of their vehicle or hit another car while attempting to stop or swerve out of the way of a deer.

More than 600 people have already died in Wisconsin traffic accidents this year. Officials say that, at that pace, the state could end up with the highest annual road toll in a decade.
