Environmental Group Wants Tougher Controls on New Power Plant
A coal-fired power plant approved to be built in North Central Wisconsin is stirring up some debate between the state and an environmental group.
The Sierra Club is appealing the DNR's decision to let Wisconsin Public Service build a generating unit that burns low sulfur coal.
It's next to three existing generators at the Weston Power Plant in Rothschild and Kronenwetter.
The DNR has 20 days to decide whether the Sierra Club has a right to the hearing.
The club wants stronger pollution controls, but a WPS spokesman says the utility's permit reflects some of the lowest emissions rates for any U.S. power plant.
