BIRCHWOOD, Wis. (AP) -- A deer hunter in northwestern Wisconsin is recovering after being attacked by a bear.

Forty-year old Jim Zemaitis says a black bear jumped him as he was on a deer drive Thursday in the Nice Lake Marsh near Birchwood in Washburn County.

He says at one point he saw a black spot from the corner of his eye, but thought it was a burned out stump. But not long after the bear charged at him bearing his teeth. He says he rolled into a ball with his hands over his head and started screaming.

He says the bear bit him and it felt like clamping instead of biting.

His cousin Rick Zemaitis heard his screams and when he found him, a black bear was on his back.

He was able to scare the bear away.

Jim Zemaitis had some puncture wounds, three stitches and a lot of bruising.

He says the attack won't deter him from hunting. But he says he will consider bringing a gun on the next deer drive.
