More than half a million people have signed up for Wisconsin's new telemarketer no call list. That's the word from state consumer protection officials.

The state Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection expects the number of people participating to reach a million to one-point-five million people.

By entering their phone numbers and zip codes, participants can take advantage of a program state officials say will end most unwanted telemarketing calls.

That program takes effect Jan. 1.

People have until Dec. 1 to get on the list.

The state has been encouraging caregivers and nursing homes to put people in their care on the list.

The number to sign up for the list is 1-866-9NO-CALL or 1-866-966-2255. It's toll free in Wisconsin.
