Wausau Casino

Wausau voters will be asked in the November election whether the city should pursue an Indian casino.

The Ho-Chunk Nation has a plan to develop a Las Vegas-style casino complex it says could attract two million people each year.

The Wausau City Council voted to put the matter to voters in a nonbinding referendum.

The tribe currently runs casinos on reservation land near Nekoosa, Black River Falls and Baraboo.

But a referendum might not persuade the state's next governor to sign off on the casino. Both Scott McCallum and Jim Doyle have said they oppose additional casinos in Wisconsin.
