9-11 Economic Impact

Wisconsin has weathered the economic reverberations of last Sept. 11, but its impact is still evident.

Industries struggling with an economic slowdown even before last September experienced further declines given the uncertainty after the terrorist attacks.

The state's unemployment rate was 4.7 percent in July -- the latest month available. That's up from 4.3 percent just before the attacks.

Manufacturing accounts for about 22 percent of Wisconsin's employment.

Some manufacturers struggle with a softness in the construction industry. Crane-maker Manitowoc Company recently laid off about 90 factory workers in its hometown.

Strong auto sales spurred by no interest loans have helped manufacturers who make auto parts -- companies such as Johnson Controls and Strattec Security.

Tourism has remained strong in Wisconsin, despite troubles in other sectors.
