Every day, hundreds of fire departments across the nation are called to fires that could have been prevented, and every year more than 1 million people in the United States are burned or injured by those fires.
National Fire Prevention Week kicks off next week and the Stevens Point Fire Department says many fires and burn injuries they see to could have been prevented by taking some simple steps.
As we get closer to the heating season, Captain Jeff Davis says it’s important to make sure carbon monoxide detectors are ready to go.
“We’ve had numerous people who are cherry-red in color because of the carbon monoxide poisoning,” says Davis. “The detectors have actually saved their lives.”
Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that displaces oxygen in the bloodstream and can put vital organs at risk.
On Saturday, October 6, 2007 the Stevens Point Fire Department will kick off Fire Safety Awareness Week at the CenterPoint MarketPlace. The event starts at 10:00 am and end at 2 pm.
Firefighters will demonstrate how in-home sprinkler systems work and will educate kids about fires and what to do during an emergency.
There will also be a book signing by Hilary Bilbrey, who wrote a children’s book based on her son’s experience as a burn survivor. The book is called “Brecker Bunny Learns to be Careful!” and the books will be free to families attending the kick off on Saturday.
