Its something no parent ever wants to hear, cockroaches are in their child's classroom, but that's just what happened at Tri-County Area Schools.

"As soon as we noticed, we took action to eliminate the issue," said School District Administrator Anthony Marinack.

Thankfully he says at no time did the roaches ever make their way into the kitchen, and after spraying for the bugs this weekend, the problem should be over.

"I feel very confident and our entomologist feels very confident that we've got the situation in hand," said Marinack.

The district administrator says the bugs came from a home right across the street from the school that was recently infested with cockroaches.

I spoke with the home's owner Louis Banda. He says he had been renting it out to a woman for the last two years. Banda says she destroyed the house, leaving garbage everywhere, but he didn't know how bad it was until he talked to neighbors.

"The whole neighborhood has complained because she's allowed cockroaches to go everywhere," said Banda.

Unfortunately for residents in Plainfield the cockroaches didn't just infest the school.

"I feel bad because I thought it was only in the house, but I walked up to a lady in another house and I see them in her house too," said Banda.

He says the tenant no longer lives in the house, and he's working to fix all the damage she caused. The homeowner also had an exterminator brought in a few times to make sure no cockroaches remain.

The school district administrator says while its unfortunate they had to deal with the bugs, they're going to use this as a learning experience and move forward.

"Strange things happen and you need to be prepared to address the situations in a safe manner," said Marinack.

Exterminators will monitor the school for the next few weeks to make sure all the cockroaches have been killed, and then periodically check the building the rest of the school year.

The school district sent a letter home to parents Friday saying there were a “few” cockroaches in the building and that they would be working to trap and bait them last weekend.

The letter the school district sent home to parents is attached to this story.
