Despite the cooler than usual temperatures for this time of year, area farmers markets are still drawing in crowds.

Hundreds of people were out searching for the freshest produce at the Wausau Farmers Market.

The warm and wet summer we've seen has helped many crops, especially cucumbers, zucchini and squash.

While some produce, like sweet corn, is nearing the end of its growing season, growers say there's still plenty of fresh produce in supply.

"Now is the best time to get heirloom tomatoes or green peppers. Peppers are ripening to red now. It takes a little longer in northern Wisconsin to get a red pepper or an orange pepper. September is the best time to eat locally. It's the best time to get down to the farmers market," Tony Schultz, an area farmer said.

Most growers aren't too worried about the sudden temperature change over the past few days and say they're prepared to cover their crops just in case there's any frost.
