Roadwork Creates Lane Restrictions in Wisconsin
Several major highways will have lanes shut down because of construction over the Labor Day weekend.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Several major highways will have lanes shut down because of construction over the Labor Day weekend.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is warning motorists to be aware that some lanes will be closed on Interstate 94 south of Milwaukee, I-94 east of Madison and Highways 41 near Oshkosh and 53 near Rice Lake.
Most road work around the state will end at noon on Friday and resume Tuesday at 6 a.m.
Peak travel times are expected to be from noon to 8 p.m. on Friday and Monday.
Extra Wisconsin State Patrol officers will be on duty as part of a campaign to crack down on drunken drivers and enforce the state's relatively new mandatory seatbelt law. The effort runs through the holiday weekend.
Adams County
Highway: WIS 13
Location: Between Adams County D (north of Rome) and Hasa Lane (east of Saratoga)
Schedule: September 7, 2010 to October 2010
Cost: $2.1 million
Description: Crews will resurface the road and improve side slopes.
Traffic impact: WIS 13 will be closed to through traffic from September 7 until September 27. Traffic will be detoured via WIS 21, I-39 and WIS 73. After the road reopens to traffic, motorists can expect to encounter weekday lane closures and flagging operations.
Highway: WIS 21
Location: Between the Juneau County line and WIS 13
Schedule: July 20 to October 22, 2010
Cost: $2.3 million
Description: Crews will resurface the highway and make improvements to the wayside and boat landing located along the Wisconsin River.
Traffic impact: During construction, WIS 21 will remain open to one lane of traffic at all times. Motorists can expect to encounter flagging operations and temporary traffic signals. The wayside at the intersection of WIS 21 and the Wisconsin River is closed.
Langlade County
Highway: WIS 64
Location: Between Highland Road and Ackley Road, town of Ackley
Schedule: July 29 to late September 2010
Cost: $780,000
Description: Crews will repair the Black Brook and Eau Claire River bridge decks and replace approaches and beam guard.
Traffic impact: WIS 64 is reduced to one lane of traffic. The Black Brook bridge crossing is restricted to an 11-foot width maximum. Motorists can expect to encounter temporary traffic signals.
Lincoln County
Highway: US 51
Location: Marathon County line to North Star Drive
Schedule: August 9 to September 17, 2010
Description: Crews will perform bridge painting.
Traffic Impacts: Motorists can expect to encounter daily northbound single lane closures on US 51 between the Marathon/Lincoln County line and North Star Drive. Lane closures will be removed at the end of each working day and by noon on Fridays.
Highway: WIS 64
Location: Between North Scott Street and Mill Street, city of Merrill
Schedule: June 29 to November 2010
Cost: $2.7 million
Description: Crews will replace pavement, street lighting, sidewalks, curbs, water mains and sewers. A roundabout will be constructed at the intersection of WIS 64 and Center Avenue.
Traffic impact: WIS 64 is closed to through traffic and detoured via Lincoln County Z and County K. Local access to businesses and residences will remain open during construction.
Marathon County
Highway: WIS 153 (*added*)
Location: Between Old 51 and East View Drive, in the city of Mosinee
Schedule: September 7 to mid-November 2010
Cost: $800,000
Description: Crews will repair the existing pavement. Improvements include resurfacing the intersections of WIS 153 with the I-39/US 51 on and off ramps.
Traffic impacts: During construction, WIS 153 will remain open to traffic. Motorists can expect to encounter single lane closures and 11-foot width restrictions. Access to adjacent businesses and residences will be maintained at all times. Crews are planning nighttime closures of the I-39/US 51/WIS 153 interchange on and off ramps for approximately 12 days in October. During the closures, traffic will be detoured via I-39, Maple Ridge Road, and Old 51.
Highway: WIS 29
Location: Between Martin Lane and 152nd Avenue, near Marathon City
Schedule: August 16 to mid-October 2010
Cost: $5.4 million
Description: Crews will resurface WIS 29 and the WIS 107 interchange with asphalt.
Traffic impacts: WIS 29 will remain open during construction. Motorists can expect to encounter single lane closures Monday through Friday. When the highway is reduced to a single lane, the speed limit will be 55 mph. WIS 29 will reopen to two lanes in each direction on Fridays at noon. Motorists can also expect to encounter single lane closures on WIS 107.

Location: Between Marathon County O and the Little Rib River bridge
Schedule: July 12 to September 17, 2010
Cost: $5.9 million
Description: Crews will resurface the highway with asphalt.
Traffic impacts: During construction, WIS 29 will remain open to one lane of traffic in each direction beginning at 2 a.m. on Mondays and ending at noon on Fridays. Crews will open the highway to two lanes of traffic in each direction for the duration of the weekend.
Highway: WIS 153
Location: WIS 153/Ranger Street/Old 51north Intersection, city of Mosinee
Schedule: June 23 to October 29, 2010
Cost: $1.9 million
Description: Crews are constructing a roundabout at the intersection.
Traffic impacts: WIS 153 will remain open during construction. Motorists can expect to encounter lane closures, flagging operations and possible delays. Ranger Street (between the intersection under construction and Edison Street), Old 51 north (between the intersection under construction and Edison Street) and the intersection of Depot Street, River Road and Old 51 will be closed for the majority of the project. Business and residential access will remain open at all times during construction. An alternate truck route will be available on I-39, WIS 34, Marathon County C, Marathon County O, and WIS 153.
Highway: WIS 97
Location: Between Ash Street (Marshfield) and South Street (Stratford)
Schedule: June 21 to September 10, 2010
Cost: $2.5 million
Description: Crews will repair pavement joints, resurface the road, repair culverts, and improve shoulders.
Traffic impact: During construction, WIS 97 will remain open to through traffic. Motorists can expect to encounter lane closures and flagging operations. Crews will open the highway to two lanes of traffic at the end of each work day.
Highway: WIS 153 (*updated*)
Location: Mosinee high and low bridges
Schedule: July 21, 2008 to early November 2010
Cost: $10.4 million
Description: Crews will widen both structures and construct a multi-use path.
Traffic impacts: Crews plan to switch traffic to the north side of the bridge by the end of the day Friday, September 3. Each lane is restricted to 10 feet. Motorists can expect to encounter lane closures and flagging operations weekdays from 8:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. until 5:30 a.m. Some lane closures may also be necessary on Saturdays before 10 a.m.

Location: Sherman Street to the US 51/WIS 52 interchange
Schedule: July 2008 to September 2010
Cost: $25.6 million
Description: Crews are reconstructing and widening US 51/WIS 29. Related work includes: construction of new high-speed ramps and upgrades to the WIS 52 interchange.
Traffic impacts: Crews are planning the following:
Southbound US 51 single lane closure between Robin Lane and Foxglove Road starting Tuesday, September 7 through Thursday, September 9, from 8 p.m. until 5 a.m.
Northbound US 51 single lane closure between Foxglove Road and County NN starting Tuesday, September 7 through Friday, September 10, from 8 p.m. until 5 a.m.
The Northbound US 51 off ramp to WIS 52 will be closed starting Tuesday, September 7 at 7 p.m. until Friday, September 10 at noon.
Northbound US 51 single lane closure between the Big Rib River and WIS 52 on Tuesday, September 7 from 7 p.m. until 6 a.m.
Northbound US 51 single lane closure between Sherman Street and WIS 52 starting Wednesday, September 8 through Thursday, September 9, from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m.
Portage County
Highway: US 10 (*updated*)
Location: Portage County N to Long Road
Schedule: July 16, 2010 to October 2011
Cost: $25 million
Description: Crews will construct a new four-lane freeway. The project includes overpasses at Portage County G and Portage County O and a new interchange with WIS 34 south. Other changes include some local road access modifications and closures.
Traffic impacts: Crews are stopping traffic -- once a day for 5 to 10 minutes -- in all directions at the intersection of US 10 and WIS 34 south for blasting operations. Blasting operations occur weekdays between the hours of 1 and 3 p.m. and will continue until late October. Victory Road -- between US 10 and Clover Road -- is closed and scheduled to reopen in fall 2011. Portage County O – from existing US 10 to approximately one mile north – is closed for the construction of the County O overpass over new US 10 and is scheduled to reopen in late September.
Shawano County
Highway: WIS 47 (*updated*)
Location: Between Burdick Street (Black Creek) and WIS 29 (Bonduel) in Outagamie and Shawano counties
Schedule: June 1 to November 2010
Cost: $9.4 million
Description: Crews will resurface the highway with asphalt, construct northbound and southbound passing lanes, replace culverts, flatten shoulder slopes, and reconstruct the intersection of Outagamie County VV and WIS 156.
Traffic impacts: WIS 47 is closed between WIS 54 (Black Creek) and WIS 29 (Bonduel). Traffic is detoured via Outagamie County S, WIS 54/55 and WIS 29. Access to local residences and businesses will be maintained during construction. Crews plan to close the WIS 47/156 intersection the morning of Monday, September 19. The intersection will remain closed until the end of the day Thursday, October 20. During the closure, traffic will be detoured via WIS 55, Outagamie County VV, Outagamie County F and WIS 187.
Waushara County
Highway: WIS 49
Location: Poy Sippi to Fremont
Schedule: August 16 to mid-October 2010
Cost: $1.7 million
Description: Crews will resurface the road and repair existing culverts.
Traffic impact: During construction, WIS 49 will remain open to traffic. Motorists can expect to encounter lane closures via flagging operations during daytime hours.
Highway: WIS 73
Location: Between WIS 21 and County BB
Schedule: August 19 to October 2010
Cost: $2.3 million
Description: Crews will resurface the highway with asphalt.
Traffic Impact: During construction, WIS 73 will remain open to traffic. Motorists can expect to encounter lane closures and flagging operations. All lanes of traffic will be open at the end of each work day.
Wood County
Highway: WIS 13
Location: West Grand Avenue/10th Avenue intersection, located in Wisconsin Rapids
Schedule: September 7, 2010 to early October
Cost: $34,000
Description: Crews will improve existing crosswalks to increase safety.
Traffic impact: During construction, WIS 13 will remain open. Motorists can expect to encounter weekday lane closures and flagging operations.
Highway: WIS 13

Traffic impact: WIS 13/54 (Riverview Expressway Bridge) will remain open during construction. Motorists can expect to encounter single lane closures with 10-foot width restrictions. Access to 2nd Avenue (north of the bridge) is closed. Crews reopened the sidewalk on the north side of the bridge.
Highway: US 10 (*updated*)
Location: Between Wood County BB and Stadt Road, city of Marshfield
Schedule: June 2, 2010 to November 4, 2011
Cost: $16.6 million
Description: Crews will realign US 10 south of the existing highway. The new section of US 10 will be a four-lane, divided highway with an interchange at the intersection of new US 10 and Wood County A. Crews will also expand WIS 13 to four-lanes between US 10 and 29th Street. New bridges will be constructed on Washington Avenue and Wood County A.
Traffic impact: No traffic impacts on US 10 or WIS 13 are scheduled until 2011. Washington Avenue, south of US 10, is closed to all traffic for bridge construction until November 2010. Nighttime operations will continue until early October.
