When you think of surgery, you may think of going under the knife with a long recovery ahead.

Many hospitals across the country are now turning to robotic surgery.

NewsChannel 7 was able to get an up close look at Aspirus Wausau Hospital's da Vinci robot system, and share one woman's story who went through the procedure.

"It was something that was I had not ever heard about it before and I was kind of excited about it," said Mary Bychinski.

Mary says back in October 2008, her doctors told her she needed a hysterectomy.

They gave her the option of doing it robotically.

"When he told me that and I would heal quickly and would miss minimal time at work and less pain in the recovery and being that I was on my own taking care of myself that was important to me," said Mary.

Recovery for a regular hysterectomy surgery is six weeks. Mary says she felt great right after the hour-long procedure.

"I was able to get up and take care of my care tasks i was able to go home in about 2 days. The scaring I have is minimal," said Mary.

Doctor Anthony Bell performed Mary's robotic surgery. He says the hospital performs more than 300 of these a year.

"About 95% laparoscopic interventions as opposed to abdominal surgery they are also performing prostate and kidney surgeries and we hope theres more in the future perhaps in general and even neurosurgery," said Dr. Anthony Bell, OBGYN at Aspirus Wausau Hospital.

The da Vinci Robot System provides five small two centimeter incisions.

One port allows the camera to access the abdomen. The other incisions are used for tools to perform the surgery.

"Safety-wise its actually safer because the surgeon has immediate control to any unexpected bleeding the interventions are much easier beaus the incisions are smaller the hospital stay is shorter and there are less complications associated with recovery," said Dr. Bell.

I also had Dr Bell do Robotic Surgery. He is the best Doctor ever. My recovery time with Robotics was very minimal. I was in the hospital 1 night and was back to my old self in no time. Congrats Dr. Bell on another job well done.
