An area non-profit says they believe someone is posing as a member of their organization, trying to scam people out of money.

The Boys & Girls Club of the Wausau Area tells NewsChannel 7 a local resident received a phone call from someone soliciting donations for their organization, but clubs throughout the country don’t use call lists to raise funds over the phone.

"Essentially what we do is call donors or call folks in the community and ask them to come into the club, learn about the Boys & Girls Club and talk with them about their support face to face,” said Maggie Brown, the development coordinator of the Boys & Girls Club of the Wausau Area. “We don't do any solicitation over the phone."

Brown says don’t send money to anyone calling and claiming to be from the organization.

Instead get as much information as you can about the caller, and contact your local police department.
