A Marathon County Sheriff's lieutenant talked with NewsChannel 7 about the proper steps police take when dealing with dangerous situations.

He says there are many factors to consider when arriving on scene.

"Some of the factors that officers need to weigh when they look at this is whether the person had intent, whether they had a weapon and whether they had a delivery system in order to inflict whatever danger is there. If they don't have those, an officer cannot use deadly force," Lt. Chad Billeb said.

Deputies and officers are trained to stop the threat, not disarm the suspect.

The Wisconsin Rapids police chief says this is the first officer-involved shooting that has taken place since he started in 2005.

The names of the suspect and officer have yet to be released.
