Telemarketers say Wisconsin's new do-not-call list makes it tough to earn a living.

The Charlton Group telemarketing firm in Madison contends the list and other similar lists in other states interferes with regular commercial activities.

Telemarketers will pay up to $20,000 a year in fees to the state to help fund the do-not-call effort. And they face $100 per call if they contact someone who's on the list.

American Family Insurance of Madison has to comply with no-call lists in about a third of the 17 states in which it does business. Direct marketing manager Andy King says the company must register the office phone of each of its 550 agents in the state. He says the new law shrinks ther number of prospects they can call.
