The number of Americans getting skin cancer is on the rise.

One local doctor says she has many patients coming to her with suspicious moles because they're more aware of what to look for.

But Dr. Hilary Bingol also believes the popularity of tanning beds could be partially to blame.

Another possible culprit, is radiation.

"Unfortunately in the distant past, they used to use radiation treatment for acne and so now we see a lot of these people developing skin cancer on their face and chest or anywhere where they had radiation exposure," Dr. Bingol said.

Most skin cancers develop on sun-exposed areas of the skin.

But melanomas, the most deadly form of skin cancer, can also develop on strange areas. Moles on the bottom of your foot, palm of your hand, or breast should be examined right away.

Dr. Bingol says the increase in cases could also have to do with the popularity of tanning beds.

"We're more aggressive at taking off concering skin lesions and that way we're finding more skin cancers. That being said, I think with the invention of tanning beds, that brought in a huge increase of skin cancers."

She says tanning beds should be avoided, but so should too much exposure in the sun without proper protection.

Dr. Bingol recommends using a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 for adults and 60 for children.

You should cover up when possible, plus wear a hat and sunglasses.
