As part of our commitment in the battle against cancer in NorthCentral Wisconsin, NewsChannel 7 does monthly Health Check 7 reports.
According to the American Cancer Society, other than skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in men. It's the second leading cause of cancer deaths.
September is Prostate Cancer Awareness month, and one local support group is urging ment to get screened beginning at age 40.
"Our group supports the idea of doing prostate cancer screening beginning at age 40," says Group Coordinator Rich Nesbitt. "If you read what most people recommend, they say start at age 50 unless you have a family history."
However, some of the men in the support group he facilitates were diagnosed before age 45.
The Man-to-Man Prostate Cancer Education and Support Group meets the first Thursday of every month at 5 p.m. at Marshfield Clinic.
